Spiked Keto Hot Chocolate

I absolutely love the holidays, but I’ll be the first to admit that they can be a bit stressful at times.

Whether it’s hosting more people than your house was ever meant to hold, spending all day cooking a meal that will keep everyone happy, or getting the last of the gifts wrapped, there’s always so much to do. Let’s face it: sometimes, Santa (aka: me) could use a little helper.

Spiked Keto hot chocolate, to the rescue! This recipe includes heavy whipping cream and chocolate chips for a truly rich and decadent experience. Add a little bourbon, and you’ll be feeling jolly in no time!

In all seriousness, this drink is so tasty, I find myself making it all season long. The first snowfall of the season, decorating with the family, or “just because” are all great reasons to whip up a big mug of joy.

If you do have little ones running around though, be sure to keep your mug out of reach. The rich hot chocolate smells so delicious, you don’t want them thinking you made this treat just for them!

Is Hot Chocolate Keto Friendly?

Yes! …as long as you make it with low carb ingredients.

This recipe gets its flavor from the cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and sweetener. As you might guess, it’s very important to use unsweetened cocoa powder, low-carb chocolate chips, and a keto-friendly sweetener — otherwise, you’ll end up with a sugar bomb!

You also want to stay away from store-bought hot chocolate, because that is NOT keto friendly. For example, 1 packet of instant hot cocoa from Nestle has 17 grams of carbs and 14 grams of sugar. No thanks, I’ll pass.

This Keto hot cocoa, on the other hand, has 3.5 grams of carbs and 2 grams of fiber per serving, leaving us with only 1 net carb! Bonus: there are 0 grams of sugar per serving.

So you can enjoy a delicious mug of rich, chocolate-y holiday cheer without the guilt.

Ways To Serve Spiked Keto Hot Chocolate

One of my favorite ways to serve hot chocolate is with a healthy serving of Keto whipped cream on top. It’s such a classic!

For an extra dose of holiday flavor, why not make a batch of Keto peppermint whipped cream? For extra peppermint flavor, you could even add a little peppermint extract to the hot cocoa when you’re adding the vanilla extract.

Want to include some spice? Add a dash of cinnamon to the hot cocoa mixture, or sprinkle a little over your whipped cream. You can’t go wrong with cinnamon and chocolate!

Have some Keto marshmallows on hand? I love cutting them into mini-squares and adding them to my mug. Just be aware that they will probably melt a little faster than traditional marshmallows… but then again, who doesn’t LOVE melted marshmallows in their hot chocolate?

When it comes to holiday staples, hot cocoa is high on the list. And now that you know how to make a Keto version, feel free to have some fun with your low-carb flavors and toppings. It’s pretty hard to go wrong!

Can You Make Non-Alcoholic Keto Hot Cocoa?

Absolutely!

Once you’ve stirred in the chocolate chips and whisked everything together, you can skip the bourbon and serve immediately. It will still be one of the richest, most delicious mugs of low carb hot chocolate you’ve ever tried.

This is also a great option for the kiddos! Of course, you can always pour their servings first, then add bourbon for the adults.

I included one shot of bourbon per serving, so if you want to make two kid-friendly ones and two adult-friendly ones, just pour the two kids’ mugs first. Then, add two shots of bourbon to the rest of the hot cocoa mixture before serving the adults. And if you want the adult drinks to be next-level amazing, be sure to add some of this chocolate extract.

Once the mixture is well-combined, allow it to heat until it is simmering slowly. Do not bring it to a boil.

Remove the hot cocoa mixture from heat, then whisk in the vanilla. Next, add the chocolate chips and continue to stir or whisk until they are melted completely.
