Ah… Bulletproof coffee…. I’m sure you’ve heard of keto bulletproof coffee. But if you are like me and HATE coffee but still want to get the benefit, well, I have the solution!
I practice Intermittent Fasting daily and will drink my Bulletproof Coffee (BPC) in the morning. What we need to talk about first, though, is 1) What is Bulletproof Coffee and 2) what constitutes the breaking of the fast (i.e. breakfast).
So,what is Bulletproof Coffee?
Traditional BPC is one cup of coffee, 1 tablespoon of MCT oil or coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. You then blend it and drink it.
I think it is important to understand why BPC is included in the Ketogenic Lifestyle and why you can look forward to it instead of being scared of it!
According to the Bulletproof folks themselves, there are 6 main reasons to drink BPC:
1) Keeps you full for hours
2) Curbs hunger
3) Promotes mental clarify
4) Increases fat burning
5) Supports your hormones
6) Tastes awesome
There is another great benefit that I want to mention as well. Many people who participate in the Ketogenic Lifestyle also do Intermittent Fasting.
Usually, that involves skipping breakfast and not eating solid food until the afternoon. They do, however, often drink BPC. Well, at least some do. There is debate around whether BPC breaks your fast.
Does it break a fast?
Now you might be wondering if that is cheating since fasting usually involves only water. Well, the Bulletproof folks believe that it does not, in fact, break your fast since BPC is only fat.
Since there are no carbs in the drink and it does not affect insulin, their opinion is that it will continue the fast.
There are other opinions out there as well that suggests that BPC does, in fact, break a fast and that anything over 50 calories does just that.
My advice would be to make your own determination. I drink BPC through my fasting.
There are quite a few calories in BPC, which is completely fine. It is an easy way to increase your fats especially at the beginning if you are struggling with eating more fats.
If BPC essential or required? Not at all. It does all the things that are listed above and really is great way to start the day, but you don’t need it.
What about the chocolate?
The next question on your mind might be: Well, Trina, will chocolate BPC break my fast? It is MY opinion that, no, it will not.
Why? Because it is only 1/3 of a gram of carbohydrate. That is SO minor that I’m just going to say it doesn’t count.
BUT, certainly, if you feel that 1/3g of carbohydrate will break your fast then only drink this version on your nonfasting days.
Here’s the deal though, I just HATE coffee. Unless, of course, it’s a sugar-filled Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino. I certainly don’t drink those anymore, but once upon a time, I did! And, boy, did they taste good. I’m guessing it doesn’t really count as coffee though!
You DO need one of these though. Mixing by hand simply does not work!
How do you make Bulletproof Coffee (BPC)?
1. Pour your cup of coffee into your blender cup.
2. Add your MCT oil
3. Add your lovely butter (it fell off my knife before I could take the picture, so you can see it floating in the coffee)!
4. Now it is time for the unsweetened cocoa! Dump it in!
5. Add your liquid stevia (optional)
6. BLEND! I use a small magic bullet for this since it is an easy blend. I have a Ninja that I use for my collagen shakes and things that have ice or nuts.
Step seven: Pour and Enjoy!
