Keto Mojito

At the time of writing this, it just turned summer! Long days, warm evenings, sunshine and happiness!

I am not a big drinker, but I do like to enjoy an adult beverage on occasion. I used to love wine but gave that up a while ago.

I will occasionally partake in a whiskey and diet coke or a refreshing keto mojito or margarita! I mean, these are mostly guilt free for me and something I can enjoy on those rare occasions without messing up my macros for the day.

How to Make Keto Mojitos

Add water, sweetener, and coconut flakes to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once fully boiling, remove from heat.

Add lime juice and mint leaves to a glass. You can crush your mint leaves or keep them whole, up to you!

Pour sweetened mixture into the glass and give it a good mix.

Add ice, vodka, and sparkling water. Stir well!

(optional) Garnish with a fresh lime slice and drink!

Now, sometimes I will freeze my glasses first and start with a cold glass. Along with the ice, this helps my keto mojito stay cold and refreshing even longer.

Is Alcohol Keto Friendly?

It can be. That comes with a caveat though.  Your liver is what metabolized fat to produce ketones.  If you don’t know what Ketones are, you should pick up a copy of my eBook Going Keto.  It has everything you need!

Here’s the deal – your liver metabolizes fat to produce ketones.  Your liver ALSO metabolizes alcohol.  Did you know that alcohol is the 4th macronutrient?  It is not an essential one, though, and your body views it as toxic.  Sorry to burst your bubble.  Given that alcohol is toxic, your liver jumps to the task to metabolize it and get it out of your system.

Therefore, it puts a temporary hold on burning fat in order to metabolize the alcohol.  This can have an effect on your weight loss and fat burning efforts if you drink a lot.

Additionally, most alcohol has carbs so you need to consider that we well.

“Hard” alcohols such as vodka and tequila have zero carbs, however.

How Many Carbs Are in a Mojito?

This keto friendly mojito has only 2 net carbs! Now, that may not be the case for your average mojito, but you can rest assured that this mojito is most certainly keto friendly!

The carbs come mostly from the lime, so you can easily control the carb count by controlling the lime content.

Will Keto Mojitos Kick Me Out of Ketosis?

That depends on a lot of circumstances. It depends on how many carbs you’ve had in a day, how many mojitos you have, how long you’ve been in ketosis, and many other factors completely unique to your body.

The short AND long answer is this – it may or it may not.
