How to Make Italian Seasoning with a Kick

Have you ever started cooking dinner, thinking you had all the spices, go and grab the Italian Seasoning and realize – IT IS GONE!

Or maybe there is only a tiny little bunch left that would be hardly enough to even consider.

Sigh… Yeah, me too.  More than I’d care to admit!

I mean, Italian Seasoning is something I ALWAYS have on hand so why would I double check that I have that one?

Ok, ok, so you are out of Italian Seasoning – what to do?  Make your own of course!

The nice thing is that this doesn’t have to be exact.  If you are missing an ingredient, well, give it a shot anyway.

What spices does Italian Seasoning contain?

The most common ingredients found in Italian Seasoning are:

Oregano

Thyme

Basil

Marjoram

Rosemary

Now, those ingredients are perfect on their own, but I wanted a slightly spicier version.  So I added in just a touch of red pepper flakes.  Just a touch, though!

How to Make Italian Seasoning With a Kick

It is incredibly easy to make your own Italian Seasoning.  There are many variations out there, but most contain a variation of the spices mentioned above!

You simply need to combine all ingredients and pulse them through a food processor to make the spice mixture finer.  Not only that, but it helps break up the red pepper flakes so there aren’t larger chunks and instead it is dispersed throughout.

Notice below how you don’t see big chunky red pepper flakes everywhere – that is why we use the food processor.

How to store homemade spices

As long as you are not adding any moisture during the processing of combining the ingredients, storage is easy!

None of the spices used for this homemade Italian Seasoning need refrigeration.

Here is what I do : I store them in a glass airtight container and take the earliest expiration date of any of the spices used and note it on my jar.  Boom – done!
