Paleo or Keto?

First of all – why am I writing this?  I did an EPIC rant on Episode 13 of my Keto Living Podcast this week.  It was about when people say “Keto isn’t long term”.  In that rant, I talk very highly of Paleo as well.  I had people reach and say “Wait – you support Paleo AND Keto?”  Heck yes!!!!

So let’s dive a little deeper into them both!

What is the Keto Diet?  

The ketogenic (keto) diet is a lifestyle that involves eating high fat, moderate protein and very low carbs.  This is unfortunately counterintuitive to what most of us have been taught our whole lives.  Healthy fats are not the enemy.  Sugar and processed foods are what you should be more concerned with.

The Keto methodology discourages processed foods and yucky ingredients such as corn, soy, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, etc…

When one participates in the keto lifestyle, they enter a state called ketosis.

Ketosis is a state where the body breaks down fat and uses a byproduct of this process, called ketones, as energy.  This happens in the absence of glucose or glycogen.   In order to enter ketosis, carbohydrate intake must be low enough where the glycogen reserves are used up and the body transitions to burning fat.

What is Paleo?

Paleo is a way of eating that goes back to our ancestral days.  It involves eating whole unprocessed foods that are non GMO and organic when possible.  The acceptable foods are meat, poultry, seafood, vegetables, nuts, and minimal fruits.  The unacceptable foods are grains,  dairy, legumes, soy, and anything processed or with added sugar.

The idea is to mimic as closely as possible to what we used to eat before the agricultural age and processed foods.

Paleo, by default, is low carb, but not as low carb as keto.

Similarities

Paleo and Keto have the following similarities:

  1. Both Paleo and Keto remove sugar.  Sugar is one of the most pervasive and destructive substances around.
  2. They are both low carb.
  3. They both focus on healthy fats, protein & vegetables.
  4. Fruit is minimzed, but not removed.

Differences

The biggest differences between Paleo and Keto are as follows:

  1. Keto is much lower in carb intake and results in ketosis.  Paleo is low carb but not low enough to get into ketosis
  2. Keto is higher fat in general than Paleo
  3. Paleo removes processed foods whereas Keto simply discourages certain ingredients, but there are keto “approved” processed foods.
  4. Keto allows dairy

Which one is the best option?

The answer to this depends on your specific health considerations.

From a general standpoint – they are both good options.  I like to combine the two and eat a more paleo version of keto.  While I do eat cheese on occasion I like the non-processed foods philosophy of Paleo.

I choose Keto due to insulin sensitivity issues but I alter it slightly so I basically do 6 days Keto and 1 day Paleo (high carb) per week.

Paleo offers a little more flexibility in terms of carbohydrates but is stricter on processed foods.

If someone is transitioning from the Standard American Diet to Keto, it is often easier to move to Paleo for a few weeks and then to Keto.  The “shock to the system” is a bit easier to tolerate as Paleo will remove the sugars and all the body to go through sugar withdrawal.  Then moving to Keto will be one step easier!

Now. when considering the best option, we don’t want to neglect low carb.  For more information when evaluating options, please read keto vs low carb if low carb is a consideration as well!

Top Steps to Succeed at Either Option!

  1. Get in the right mindset – decide on your success!
  2. Get support from family and friends if needed.
  3. Clean out the pantry of items that might tempt you.
  4. Plan out your meals for an entire week so that there is no guesswork.
  5. Take 1-2 days per week and prepare.  Cut veggies, prepare meats, and do any work ahead of time that is required.
  6. Listen to your body and what it needs.

Either of these diets can offer great results.  Take the time to research and do your due diligence to determine which one might be a great option for you!
