Keto Rum Balls

There are so many traditional holiday treats out there, I’m starting to wonder whether they’re truly for celebrating the season, or if they were actually invented to help us cope with the inevitable stress of the holidays…

But then again, why not both?

So whether you’re feeling the holiday cheer or you need a little something to get you in the spirit, these Keto rum balls have you covered! And with only 1 net carb each, you can kick back and indulge guilt-free.

If you’re unfamiliar with rum balls, they’re tasty truffles that are traditionally made from a base of crumbled vanilla cookie crumbs or cake. In fact, there are tons of homemade rum ball recipes made with vanilla wafers as an easy shortcut.

But we’re not afraid to do a little baking to keep the carbs low, right? Right! So instead, we’ll whip up a batch of super simple vanilla cookies for our base.

Then, we’ll mix in some tasty goodies like low-carb sweetener, unsweetened cocoa powder, and sugar-free honey. Oh, and don’t forget the rum!

Do Rum Balls Contain Alcohol?

Why yes, yes they do. What gave them away?

Okay, joking aside, what you’re probably wondering is whether or not we’ll be burning off the alcohol during the cooking process. And if not, just how much holiday cheer can we get from these rum balls?

So here’s the fun part: we actually won’t be cooking the rum at all! We don’t add the alcohol to the truffle mixture until AFTER we’ve baked and cooled the vanilla cookies. That means nothing will burn off in the cooking process.

However, we should keep in mind that this recipe is for 30 rum balls, and we only use ⅓ of a cup of rum. That’s about 2.67 ounces in the whole thing.

If a shot is 1.5 ounces, then there’s a little less than 2 shots in the entire recipe. So if you eat all 30 rum balls, you might feel a little something… most likely a stomach-ache.

If you really want to put the “spirits” in “holiday spirit,” try this winter Keto martini. It would pair perfectly with a rum ball or three.

What Kind Of Rum Should You Use For Rum Balls?

Now we’re asking the important questions.

The good news is that white rums and dark rums both have zero carbs. However, you’ll want to make sure the brand of rum you’re purchasing doesn’t have any added syrups or sugar, which can derail your good intentions!

When it comes to this recipe, I would recommend unsweetened dark rum. It adds a deep, rich flavor that is just perfect.

And if you have any leftover, use it to whip up decadent Keto rum cake next!

Ways To Decorate Your Rum Balls

Want to get a little festive with your slightly-boozy treats? Let’s have some fun!

For the final step of this recipe, I suggest sprinkling them with some low-carb powdered sweetener. If you’re looking for something super easy, stick with that.

But you could also roll them in finely-chopped coconut, roll them in chopped nuts, sprinkle them with unsweetened cocoa powder, add sugar-free sprinkles, drizzle them in melted sugar-free chocolate… the options are endless!

How Do You Store Keto Rum Balls?

Once the rum balls have set in the freezer, you can transfer them to an airtight container or plastic gallon bags for easier storage.

I recommend storing them in the freezer to keep their texture. They can last for up to 2 months!

  1. Rum (or bourbon!) balls have always been a favorite holiday treat! I have also added instant coffee to the rum version (ends up tasting like kahlua!) just to mix things up. Thanks for this keto version, I couldn’t get my head around how to do this without that box of vanilla wafers!

    You rock, chica!
