What is a Tart?

A tart is a baked open top pastry dish. Tarts are generally served as an appetizer, although you’ll sometimes see them served as a dessert. As an appetizer, though the filling may be either sweet or savory.  While the tart is generally placed in the same category as pie, quiche, and flan, it’s easily recognizable with its pastry base and open top not covered by pastry.  You may also see tarts served as tartlets or mini tarts.

The name tart comes from the French word tarte, which translates to both pie and tart. This is because, with the exception of lack of topping, a pie and tart are essentially the same things. There are some that think that tarts originated in Medieval times as a product of their pie baking, others believe that they came from a tradition of layering food. What we do know is that they started out as meat-filled savory dishes and later on people began enjoying them as a sweet treat as well.
